Step 1. Choosing the Issues you want to work on

What areas of your child's special needs would you like to work with?

Is it their:

  • Learning
  • Happiness and resilience
  • Behaviour
  • Skills (e.g. physical, social)

The first step in the MaP process is to make a list of the areas you would like to work on.

We include three checklists that may help:

Preschool child
School aged child
Other issues to consider

After you have chosen the issues you would like to work on

We suggest you set two priority issues

1) What is the MAIN DEVELOPMENTAL (behavioural, learning) issue to work on

2) What is the MAIN RESILIENCE (mental health, self esteem) issues for your child?

Example resilience issues include

  1. Strengths and Interests: E.g. Spending time enjoying what they are good at, what they enjoy
  2. Happiness: E.g. that they are happy at school, or happy to go to school
  3. Self Esteem: E.g. That they understand, accept and like themselves
  4. Stress: E.g. protection from bullying, or from other situations that make them anxious

Once you have your list, and your priorities issues identified, the next step is to try to set some goals for these issues.
