My contribution to this team is one that combines my experience as an educator with the insight and empathy that comes from being a parent. As an educator my experience dates back to primary school teaching in Mount Isa. From there, I have taught in many major centres, as well as outback mining communities throughout Australia. It was during my time in the small outback centres, where resources were often limited, that I became focused on different learning styles and the many different needs of students. To gain further knowledge and formalize this interest, I completed my Masters of Education in 2002.From there I worked as a special needs tutor in and around Brisbane. This was a powerful role as many schools were welcoming of extra assistance and expertise in helping individual students in school time. I was able to work with students, families and teachers to not only set up and implement individualised programs, but also make recommendations for changes in procedures and routines. In having access to the school situation as well as the home, I was also able to assist parents in understanding how the school system works, the resources that are available to them, and how to better manage their child’s needs. Within the group of students who I worked with, there were a variety of needs. They ranged from students with developmental delays and disabilities, to students who had prolonged absences from school due to illness. It was my experience with each of these learners there was a need for success at their own level, and that each success was the basis for the next. This is the premise for all that I do. Every member of the child’s support team must be aligned with the same goals so that any success can be celebrated by all and built on. My role in the SchoolLinks team is to analyze the assessment that has been conducted and in consultation with the child, family, and school, set up an individualised program. I can then be of assistance to implement and monitor the program in the home and school. My work is characterized by a high level of support to all who are involved. My passion and strength is taking the time to get to know children, families and educators, so that in an environment of trust and communication, we can work towards common goals, not only for the child, but for all who are involved.
